The Drop Zone

January 19, 2010 by H. Pearce Scott

When looking at a house or plans for a house think about the “drop zone”.

By that I mean where are you going to drop your keys, purse, the mail etc when you walk into the house? For many of us it ends up being the kitchen counter, the breakfast table, a small console in the foyer – accidental choices. It’s better to have a preferred spot “designed” into the plan. That way the everyday clutter has an out sight home that is still convenient for in and out flow.

When planning a location think through the sequence of coming home and make sure the obvious drop zone isn’t at the far end of the house from where you come and go on a daily basis. It should be one the first two or three area you encounter when coming home and one of the last places as you leave.
